COURSE OVERVIEW
The Fundamentals Certificate in Early Childhood Care and Education (FECCE) programme is specially designed to enable preschool assistants to play a valuable role in supporting the preschool teachers in classroom management and supervision of children aged 18 months to 4 years. Graduate from FECCE may pursue Higher Certificate in Infant Care to become a certified educarer/infant teacher.

- Acquire knowledge and skills in the growth and development of the child
- Meet and respond to the basic needs of children
- Plan and deliver quality programs and experiences for young children
- Provide a stimulating and safe environment for young children

Minimum Secondary 2 level education or its equivalent

Module Synopsis
Child Development and Guidance (0-8 years)
Students will be equipped with key learning theories in relation to practice and basic skills of working and guiding children. This will facilitate them to engage in reflective practice and play a valuable and supporting role in assisting the teacher in the classroom management and supervision of young children.
Creative Approaches to Caring and Learning
Students will be provided with opportunities to develop their understanding and awareness in supporting children’s early understanding especially in areas of language, mathematics, music and movement, and creative arts through play. They will be equipped with skills for facilitating creative learning amongst children working in small group activities.
Safety, Health and Nutrition
Students will learn the basic facts of health and nutrition practices so that they will be able to apply these in the course of their work with young children.
They will also understand the safety, health and nutrition needs of young children and will be provided with practical experiences and skills in managing aspect of routine and recognise child abuse and neglect.
Professional Development
Students will be aware of their professional positions on children. The module will address the professional role of the teacher and foster students’ sense of identity and personal effectiveness. Students will study the Code of Ethics and develop the skills to work with children and adults.
Working with Families
Students will be able work with families, learn specific strategies and become skilled educators of their children.
This module highlights the importance of teachers supporting parent by acknowledging their concerns, feelings, challenges and contributions in the ongoing care and education of their child.
Supervised Teaching Practice
The practicum strand of this course is designed to provide students with the exposure, experience and confidence necessary to undertake various roles and responsibilities as an assistant teacher. Students will apply child development theories and principles in their respective work settings guided by experienced mentors and field supervisors.
In this module, students will be actively engaged in assisting the teachers in the real classroom setting. Besides practicing some classroom management techniques/strategies, students will learn some effective communication skills in assisting a class and working collaboratively with children, their parents and with other professional colleagues. In the process, students’ awareness of the responsibilities and roles of the teacher will increase, as well as the level of their confidence in working with children.
